As settlers arrived in Kentucky, establishing a homestead was a top priority.  Early housing versions during this period were single-pen or double-pen log cabins with a masonry fireplace and chimney built outside the cabin walls.  As soon as possible, those structures were replaced with hewn log walls, and improvements were made by adding wood flooring, internal fireplaces, plaster walls, external siding, and windows to let in the light.  Many of these structures have returned to the earth, but the best ones became part of our heritage and are the nucleus of larger homes and barns in Kentucky.
