Did You Know? How
can a round star make a square nebula? This conundrum comes
to light when we are studying planetary nebulas like IC 4406.
Evidence indicates that IC 4406 is likely a hollow cylinder;
its square appearance is the result of our vantage point in
viewing it from the side. Were IC 4406 viewed from the top,
it would likely look similar to the Ring Nebula. Three
major sources contribute to the far-infrared sky: our solar
system, our galaxy, and our universe. In
low Earth orbit there is not enough atmosphere to diffuse and
scatter sunlight, so shadows are black and the sky is dark -
even when the sun shines. The harsh lighting produced dramatic
effects as mission specialist Gregory Harbaugh photographed
colleague Joseph Tanner during their second space walk to service
the Hubble Space Telescope in 1997. A
picture of the NGC 7009 star, taken in 1996, allows a better
understanding of the mysterious process that transformed a low-mass
star into a white dwarf star. The central star of NGC 7009 first
expelled green gas that now appears barrel-shaped. This green
gas confines stellar winds flowing from the central star, creating
a jet that forms reddish handle-shaped extensions. The
"Dragon Storm" on Saturn was found to be responsible
for bursts of radio static monitored by Cassini instruments
as the spacecraft orbited the ringed planet in 2004. It is now
thought to be a giant thunderstorm with radio noise produced
in high-voltage discharges. Broken
metal and a scorched landscape on Mars make the impact site
of Oppportunity's heat shield one of the more interesting locations
the rolling robot inspected. The site is of interest partly
because its creation is relatively well understood. The impact
splattered light red dirt from the subsurface, while a darker
material appears to track towards large debris. |
