In the Pleiades star cluster, the Merope star's light is slowly destroying a passing cloud of gas and dust. While the cloud and Merope have co-existed for millions of years, in the past 100,000 years, part of the cloud has moved so close to the star that the star's light affects its dust in an unusual manner. It is not known whether the cloud will survive.
