Like
a butterfly, a white dwarf star begins its life by casting off
the cocoon that enclosed its former self. The planetary nebula
NGC 2440 contains one of the hottest white dwarf stars known.
Our Sun will eventually become a "white dwarf butterfly,"
but not for another 5 billion years. Based
on measurements made by an orbiting laser, Mar's North Pole
terrain is an ice cap approximately 1,200 km across, a maximum
of 3 km thick and cut by canyons and troughs up to 1 km deep.
It also indicates that the cap is composed primarily of frozen
water. In
the Pleiades star cluster, the Merope star's light is slowly
destroying a passing cloud of gas and dust. While the cloud
and Merope have co-existed for millions of years, in the past
100,000 years, part of the cloud has moved so close to the star
that the star's light affects its dust in an unusual manner.
It is not known whether the cloud will survive.
