The Apollo 16 crew deployed the first lunar astronomical observatory in 1972. The Far Ultraviolet Camera / Spectograph used a 3-inch diameter Schmidt Telescope to photograph Earth, nebulas, star clusters, and the Large Magellanic Cloud. The tripod-mounted astronomical equipment was placed in the shadow of the Lunar Module so it would not overheat.
